The world’s foremost explorers, researchers and scientists know that a properly used 4×4 vehicle is an indispensable tool for discovery… Why should you be any different in your wants and needs?

Overland Experts serves clients seeking to make the best possible use of their own vehicles. Whether they want to four wheel as a sport, learn safer ways to operate an SUV, or are planning a major expedition, OEX is there with challenging courses located in Connecticut, North Carolina, Utah and Virginia.

The OEX staff shares a love of the outdoors and a passion for using a vehicle as a means to enjoy and experience the outdoors or the journey to a destination.

If you take pride in your vehicle, take pride in your driving.

We at OEX feel the driver training is the first “modification” you should get for your vehicle either before you chose one or after you have found your dream. Off road driving, done well, is composed of three aspects: Driver skill, Recovery and Repair. “Drive before you Drive, Recovery before you Recover and Repair before you Repair”. We will teach you to plan and execute driving at a level you may never have conceived of before. The linear and methodical approach we have developed over the last 20 years works, and works very well.

At any of our OEX courses you will have terrain choices that emulate and replicate the terrain found anywhere in the world. Our course are composed of three base categories: purpose build courses, mixed natural and purpose, and existing terrain. We progress from one to the next and teach you to master the techniques for all terrains and obstacle types. As this progression occurs we bring in recovery and vehicle repair. It is training to understand the ramifications of terrain type, obstacle type, recovery, and repair that allows for the development of a truly educated and effective plan. You will learn to do all of these things with minimal environmental impact and with a consciousness of environmental stewardship. You will be challenged. You will have fun. You will be amazed. You will have a great time and leave knowing how drive any “road” in the world in any condition.

OEX courses are designed specifically to each client’s needs depending on their current skill level and special interests. We evaluate each student’s progress with our linear method of training and constantly adjust their skill level as their proficiency improves.

Curriculum

The objective of this training is to create a person or group of people who will reliably operate 4×4 vehicles with impunity, reliability, and safety. This skill set will be carried out habitually in all possible environmental conditions.

The training will create a thinking, intelligent, independent, and adaptable individual able to move through any terrain encountered.

OEX prides itself in concentrating on consistency of our message and training methodology. No matter which one of our branches you go to, the message will remain the same – linear progress, method, repetition, practice and an awareness of individual’s differing learning styles. It is this consistency of our curriculum, our trainers, our courses, and our vehicles that allows for a rapid learning process that cements the learned skill set into a person’s long-term memory. We are also intent on keeping up with the changes in current technology and we are constantly looking for ways to bring in novel techniques or equipment. Attention to these details keeps people coming back to us for more advanced training, or just to travel with us, or use our skills on related projects.

Vehicles

At OEX you can use one of our many fleet vehicles or your own. Using your own is always preferable, but if you do not have one, do not want to damage it, or have not yet done the modifications you want to (This is good, do not modify until training with us. We will save you money and time by helping your get only what you need!), or just want to drive a four door Toyota Hilux Turbo Diesel, for instance, then you are welcome to use ours.

Our fleet is composed to offer a continuum of platform types, from 4 cylinder diesels up through V8 gasoline automatics. It is understanding how to drive ANY vehicle in ANY terrain that allows you to become a truly good driver. We do not teach “button” classes for one particular platform. Button classes teach pigeon holed approaches to driving in a world that has an infinite variety. We try to match our training to the continuum of the real world.

Overlanding is a state of mind

It’s funny, but when Overland Experts was started, the word “overland” was rarely used in America. This word was more popular in Europe and on the African continent. Since then, it has become a more noticeable word, or pursuit. This is both good and bad. “Wheeling” groups wanting to differentiate from “Overlanding;” or “Off-Road” from “Off Highway” and vice versa; its semantics and grades of definitions and concentrations of what appeals to a person. Overlanding vs. Off-Roading is a state of mind, not necessarily a state of skills.

To Overland, you need to drive well, recovery well and repair well. Without these skills, you’re unprepared to even pick your vehicle, outfit it, chose a route, and/or take a trip. Your foundation is, to say the least, weak and dangerous.

After you have driver skill, then you need to learn how to outfit a vehicle, navigate, use first aid, learn people skills (so you don’t get shot at a border crossing because you’re loud and obnoxious), situational awareness, major repair skills, and more.

Many people like to think Overlanding is just driving on dirt roads. Some Overlanding is that simple and people tend to think: “Well, if I can drive on the road how hard can it be?” In its truest sense Overlanding is much tougher and much more – it’s a long-term self-sufficient vehicle-based expedition. It is long-haul off road driving, which requires the same driver skills and vehicle skills as any off road driving, and more. A well trained Overlander is a very good off road driver and technical wheeler, that also takes very long trips off the grid, and therefore needs more skills in their toolbox of tricks.

We at OEX differentiate Overlanding as a separate entity, not really because we see delineation, but more so to get people to focus on their own goals and objectives. Our normal 4×4 training tends to push into what some think as Overlanding, such as field repair and situational awareness, but ultimately driving, recovery and repair are the focus of our 4×4 and Off Road driving courses.

At any of our OEX courses you will have terrain choices that emulate and replicate the terrain found anywhere in the world.
